Alfred "Uganda" Roberts playing his new tan drums sounding wonderful after Katrina destroyed those long used glorious black ones and sounding just the same to me tuned to ring true to the familiar sound and line backer djembe player on Alfred's left: An ole Alfred pal according to Alfred's nice friendly wife "He showed up years ago to learn drum playing and stuck around." Uganda, four drummer set played the old way, taking me back 35 years, to when I first found Alfred under Jazz Fest trees, my 1 st time for both, was just wonderful. Followed by long hair homage, shades of the fess's 70's style and with John Cleary on keys. Next, New Orleans, LA funk set as Alfred is surrounded by a young very funky white guy band. All paying respect to the drummer working hard for the wonderful centerpiece of hand drum poly-rythms. Worn out before the evening music ends, I leave Maple after this wonderful fun-filling, night of Alfred's greatness, once again.
