More on Shantala
An Evening of Kirtan (Sacred Chanting) with Shantala
Tuesday, April 15 at 7 PM at LemuriaBooks.com Building
Benjy and Heather are gifted vocalists and their unique expression and understanding of kirtan is evident not only in their talent, but also in the deep reverence they both share for this beautiful traditional music and ancient form of devotion. Benjy Wertheimer is an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist (playing tabla, congas, percussion, esraj, guitar, and keyboards) and vocalist specializing in Indian classical music. He has played with a diverse range of musicians, including Carlos Santana, Paul Winter, and Narada Michael Walden. Heather Wertheimer is a nationally award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist. plays an ancient Indian instrument called the esraj. It is a bowed instrument with 4 primary strings and 15 sympathetic strings. It was created to mimic the human voice. He will be playing two esraj's that night, one of which is quite rare. He also plays the tablas, traditional Indian drums. His performances are truly amazing as he is very gifted on both instruments (as well as the African djembe drum) He has studied with master musician Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and tabla master/percussionist Zakir Hussain for over 30 years, drawing from the ancient, traditional and classical lineage of Indian music and culture.
Heather plays guitar and tamboura, a traditional stringed Indian instrument, noted for it's "droning" sound which provides the etheral foundation for much of Indian music.
As Shantala, Benjy and Heather tour throughout the U.S. and abroad. In addition to sharing the stage and recording studio with sacred music luminaries such as Krishna Das, Deva Premal, and Jai Uttal, they have released a number of critically acclaimed CDs, including their newest kirtan releaseSri (pronounced shree).
